Khushi was awarded the Division of Life Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (DLS SURF) 2022. To conclude her fellowship, Khushi presented a poster on her project: the development of a new gene expression system that allows for the controlling of Drosophila genes without having to use temperature sensitive proteins. Khushi and her team uses an auxin(major plant hormone)-inducible degree system that can remove the need for a temperature shift in gene expression experiments. In collaboration with the Southall Lab, they were able to monitor how this system affects gene expression with GFP, a green fluorescence protein, as well as examine its behavioral effects and whether we are able to control behavior. During the summer, Khushi and the team ran experiments that monitored the recovery of Drosophila from auxin, as well as experiments that measure the effects of CRISPR when paired with this gene expression system. Congrats again Khushi!
New Lab Member Alert - Welcome Akanksha Mathivanan!
Akanksha Mathivanan, a sophomore studying Cell Biology and Neuroscience joins our lab through the Aresty Summer Science program! She will work on uncovering the effects of Traumatic Brain Injury on sleep and circadian rhythms in Drosophila melanogaster!
Chenyue is awarded the Waksman Undergraduate Fellowship Award (WURF)
Chenyue was awarded the Waksman Undergraduate Fellowship Award (WURF) and will be investigating intra-PI research connectivity by using the neuro-tracing tools in this program, such as BacTrace(retrograde) and Trans-tango(anterograde). Congratulations Chenyue!
Congratulations Stephen!
Stephen successfully defended his honors thesis today. We are very proud of him for all his hard work. Congratulations!
Dr. Barber wins New Jersey Commission on Brain Injury Research pilot award !
The lab was awarded a New Jersey Commission on Brain Injury Research pilot award to work on fruit fly traumatic brain injury models! Dr. Barber is “incredibly proud of the staff scientist + undergraduate team that got this completely new research direction launched in a pandemic.” Congratulations!
Happy new year from the Barber Lab!
At the first Barber lab new year party, we ate delicious Pakistani food and participated in a cookie decorating contest! It was a fun time and we look forward to another great year.
Congratulations to Naureen for becoming the labs first PhD candidate!
The Barber lab has it's first official PhD candidate! We are all extremely proud of Naureen’s accomplishment. Dr. Barber threw a special surprise party for Naureen with all of her closest friends. We are all very happy to have her in our team, congrats!!
Happy Halloween 2022 from the Barber Lab!
The lab dressed up to celebrate Halloween! From left to right: Bella’s dad from Twilight (Kushi), Appa (Naureen), Arthur (Abby), Egyptian Pharaoh (Sergio), Princess Gritty (Annika). Happy Halloween from the Barber lab!
Congratulations Dr. Barber!
Congratulations to Dr. Barber for receiving the Glenn Foundation for Medical Research and AFAR Grant for Junior Faculty! Dr. Barber is excited to “expand my lab's work to include effects of aging and dietary stress on inter-tissue circadian coordination in Drosophila.” https://www.afar.org/2021-grant-recipients#A
1st annual Barber-Sehgal lab exchange
On a sunny day at Waksman, the Barber lab welcomed the Sehgal lab to the 1st annual lab exchange. The program included nine short data presentations, delicious biryani, malai kofta, and gulab jamun from Delhi garden for lunch, and snacks . An award was given for best use of memes in a presentation.
